202 BENCH

Our reeditions are a way of not forgetting, recovering and updating our heritage. This one also wants to shed light on a little known pioneer of Spanish design:Joaquim Belsa, founder of Aresta. He was one of the first to notice the potential of rattan as a valid material for modern design. He would use canes of different width and a single stroke method to create his objects. By reediting his Bench 202 we pay tribute to Belsa’s figure and innovative approach to rattan.

Joaquim Belsa

Throughout his career, the Catalan industrial designer Joaquim Belsa Aldea (1929-2018) had an interest in the design and production of simple, austere furniture conceived for a wide audience. In his designs he used traditional and durable materials, such as natural wood, manila cane, cattail or textiles. In 1961 he founded Aresta, the company he created together with his brother Jaume and Joan Mañá, active until 1985. The way of working that characterized Belsa during this period was based on the idea of a single line and a functionalist will. Some of his designs were awarded with the ADI/FAD Delta Awards in 1961, 1963 and 1970.
